15. The Monster Under the Bed

15

As children, many of us feared the monster hiding in the darkness beneath our beds. As adults, those monsters have evolved into financial anxiety, fear of failure, loneliness, or self-doubt. Write a creative story or dialogue where you sit down on the floor and peek under the bed to talk to your adult monster. Give it a physical description—does it look like a tangled ball of gray yarn, or a shadow with sad eyes? Ask it what it wants. Often, we find that our deepest anxieties are just trying to keep us safe from vulnerability. Demystifying your monster on paper makes it far less terrifying.
