12. The Creepy Carnival of Terror

12

Step right up to the most unsettling show on earth with a creepy carnival theme that plays on the classic fear of sinister clowns. Construct a colorful yet heavily distressed carnival ticket booth at the entrance of your driveway using cardboard or plywood painted in faded red and white stripes. Hang a cracked, hand-painted sign reading “The Carn-Evil” or “Sideshow of Terror” above the entrance. Drape strings of vintage bulb party lights overhead, but unscrew a few bulbs or use flickering flame-effect bulbs to give the lighting an unstable, abandoned feel.

Populate your carnival with disturbing clown figures. You can use poseable mannequins dressed in oversized, stained satin clown suits, complete with frizzy neon hair and exaggerated, sinister face paint. Position one clown holding a bunch of black balloons, another sitting on a unicycle, and a third popping out of a giant jack-in-the-box. Add carnival-themed props like a “Test your Strength” high striker, a wheel of misfortune, and popcorn tubs filled with plastic eyeballs. Play a warped, slowed-down track of calliope carnival music on a loop to truly unnerve your visitors.
